How the Internet Works?

Every Computer connected to the internet uses a protocol called Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), which enables computers to communicate with one another. TCP allows the exchange of data packets and IP specifies the format and addressing scheme of the packets. These data packets are
specific data processed by protocols so it can sent across a network. Most computers are connected to the internet through something called gateways. Gateways connect Local Area Networks or LANs to the internet backbone. When a user requests data through a LAN from a server thats online, the request is divided in to packets of data, then routed through your LAN and other networks to the Internet Backbone, it is then routed through other networks until reaching it's destination server containing the requested information, this destination server then sends information in response to the request using the same process, with the transmission taking a network route though various other networks to return to the user sending the request. Essentially all paths through the internet lead to your destination. Network devices called routers determines the best path across a network. TCP/IP ensures that your information is transferred quickly and reliably. Routers recognize damaged connections across networks, thereby allowing data to be transferred using TCP/IP through the best path to and from the internet backbone, destination server and client(Internet user). When browsing, you'll now have and idea of what's happening behind the graphic user interface that you're presented with when you're visiting one of your favorite websites. |
