What are LANs and WANs?
By Emir Emil of Emirco Studios Ltd
LANsLANs are known as Local Area Networks. This is a group of computers connected within a confined geographic area. A LAN usually consists of as few as two computers to as much as any number of computers with various types or servers. LANs are commonly used and are proven to be most useful for intraoffice communication. Often times, a LAN can extend over several yards in extreme cases over several miles, but is generally confined to one building or a group of buildings, such as a corporate office in Miami, Florida for example. LANs are also often times connected to each other. By connecting LANs to other LANs in an office building the divisions or departments of that office would be able to communicate with each other and efficiently share data, information and knowledge. WANsWANs are known as Wide Area Networks. This consists of two or more LANs that span a wide geographic area. For Example, many large and medium sized business may have offices in many countries across the world. Each office building would have their own individual LAN to share local resources, however, to create the WAN each LAN would have to be connected via telephone lines, T1 lines or satellites and this would create better connectivity and cohesion between offices worldwide. Further to geographic distance, the other main difference between LANs and WANs is data transmission costs. In a LAN the organization owns all components. In a WAN, they typically lease some necessary components needed to transmit data, components such as high speed telephone lines or satellite connectivity which would add data connectivity costs to the cost of operating and maintaining a WAN.
